Pagalariyaan

“Pagalariyaan” is a 2024 Tamil fantasy thriller directed by Murugan and produced under Rishikesh Entertainment. Vetri Sudley and Akshaya Kandamuthan have starring roles in the film.

The story develops over one night and two concurrent events. “Wolf” (Vetri) is in hiding with a girl called “Silent” (Akshaya Kandamuthan), unaware that she has been kidnapped for an ulterior purpose. “Silent's brother” (Murugan Raj) is in the meantime frantically looking for his missing sister without knowing the danger that faces her. Throughout the night, the characters' backstories, secrets, and hidden agendas are revealed, culminating in a dramatic and unexpected ending.

Silent and Wolf both have black pasts, each carrying the weight of a complex history. Wolf, a criminal by heart, has the determination to depart with Silent, unaware of the real motive behind her so-called friend. Meanwhile, her brother, with compassion and a feeling of responsibility, fights against time in reaching her before she dies. In the crossing of their routes, the night surprises everyone with a twist of fate, revealing terrifying facts.

The film uses suspense in its eerie mood and shocking storyline. The darkness setting, as well as the ambiguous motives of the characters, suspends the viewer's interest. The acting adds depth to the narrative, especially in their interpretation of the characters' emotions. The camerawork is good at capturing the darkness and the tense atmosphere and brings the atmosphere to life and immerses the viewer.

But whereas “Pagalariyaan” establishes a promising premise, it fails to emotionally connect its viewers to its characters. Their backstories and their struggles, if interesting, aren't well examined to get to the point of making one personally relate to their plight on an emotional level. The movie does, however, manage to keep one glued by its fast-flowing narration pace and its hair-raising turn and twist turns.

On the whole, "Pagalariyaan" is a thriller with an original story. Even though it doesn't develop its characters, the suspenseful setting and thought-provoking storyline make it worth watching for fans of suspense and thrillers.
